The server configuration of a directory is managed by the use of the .htaccess file. One syntax error or incorrect rule in this file can immediately result in an HTTP 500 Error of the whole site. The most obvious solution here is to simply rename the .htaccess file through FTP; in case the 500 Error Code has disappeared you can tell that the issue is in the directives of that file.
